The GCWA recently took part in the exhibit hall during Leadership Allegany!'s Environment Day. Program participants learned about western Maryland's environment throughout the day, and had a chance in the afternoon in to interact with local environmental organizations, including the GCWA.Backyard Buffer Program
Once again the GCWA partnered with the Maryland Forest Service to help implement the Backyard Buffer Program. The program gives out bags of 25 native trees to residents who own property along a stream or river, which creates a vegetaive "buffer" between the property and the water. This helps with erosion control and stormwater runoff, as well as creating habitat for riparian-dwelling animals.
120 bags were given out to residents between Garrett and Allegany Counties in April. If you live along a waterway and would like to receive a bag of trees next year, please email the GCWA!
National Brownfields Conference
The GCWA was represented at the 2011 National Brownfields Conference in Philadelphia from April 3-5. The conference brought people from all over the country (and even internationally) to discuss the problems and solutions of brownfields. A brownfield is a former industrial or comercial plot of land that is no longer in use and has low-level contaminants. The GCWA presented a poster on the Frostburg Grows Grow-it-Local greenhouse project that has been working on for the past year or so. The greenhouses are slated to be built on a former strip mine as a way to repurpose the land, which is considered a brownfield.
