Recent Plantings

Cheat Mountain

In late April, the GCWA helped out with a tree planting at a former coal mine site on Cheat Mountain in West Virginia, which was coordinated by ARRI.

FSU Planting

The GCWA partnered with Frostburg State University to plant almost 100 trees as part of 350.org's Global Work Party. This was one of over 7,000 events taking place in nearly 200 countries around the world to bring attention to climate change. Pizza was generously provided by Pizza Hut and Fatboys Pizza Shack, both located in Frostburg.

Meadow Park Tree Planting
The GCWA, in coordination with the Town of Barton, had a tree planting at Meadow Park on May 4. 
With the help of George's Creek Elementary School teachers, Mr. Snyder and Mrs. Morris, 39 fifth grade students helped create a successful tree planting. 

Appalachian Regional Reforestation Intiative (ARRI) Tree Planting

In April 2010, the GCWA partnered with ARRI and the AmeriCorps NCCC River5 crew to plant 8,000 trees on 16 acres of reclaimed mine land and riparian environments.  This planting was made possible through the help of regional partnerships including the LaVale Wal-Mart, FSU football team, American Bird Conservancy, MD Bureau of Mines, MD Department of Natural Resources, Frostburg Pizza Hut, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, the Merrills of Savage State Park. 

Mountain Ridge High School Green House

In September, 2009 GCWA volunteers helped start a tree nursery for Tom Kozikowski's environmental science classes.

Washington Middle School Tree Planting

GCWA volunteers helped DNR Forest Service and the City of Cumberland plant trees in October, 2009 as part of an urban tree canopy program.

Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative (ARRI)

The GCWA partnered with the MD Bureau of Mines in April 2009 as part of ARRI to reclaim abandoned strip mines.

Knapp's Meadow Riparian Planting

In Spring 2009 GCWA volunteers worked with George's Creek Elementary School students to plant native trees and plants in the Knapp's Meadow Streambank Restoration site.

Mt. Ridge High School Rain Garden
In May 2009 GCWA volunteers worked with Mountain Ridge High School students to plant over 700 native species plants and shrubs in an educational rain garden at the school. Read more about the planting in the Appalachian Independent.
